Disclaimer: There will be cuss words (a lot of them), controversial thoughts, my own opinions and a helpful dose of cynicism within this piece. Please bear this in mind while reading. I don't write anything with the intent to offend so read at your own risk.
FYI: I'm in a cynical mood and writing all of this while watching Bo Burnham so try and read this keeping that in mind.
So, I am going to try and keep it light and put in my own two pence about this, but I am going to speak about some of the more negative sides of the industry and my views. COZ WHO DOESNT LIKE MY UNWARRANTED OPINIONS!
I think that there are some real issues with the K-pop industry and everyone wants to say "THeY aRe OVerWorkINg tHe IdoLs!" and "[insert company here] aRe SnaKeS". And..... ok yeah I am taking the piss and being a bit dismissive, but that's because, and imma say it loud for the people in the back, THAT. SHIT. HAPPENS. EVERYWHERE.
Like how many western stars have you heard of that say they used drugs/alcohol/unhealthy coping mechanisms because they were struggling or look back and hate their music, left their group because none of the connections were real. This shit is all across the world like a virus and some 11-year-old screaming "Chenle for president!" isn't gonna change shit.
Do I think that the things happening are ok? No of course not, I'm not a complete psychopath. But I believe that getting yourself in a massive tiz isn't going to save your favourite band.
Ok, enough rambling.
#1 - SM and their hate for the Chinese, NCT Dream, Renjun in particular.
Ok, so do I think that SM handles the people who work for them, who are making them money, as well as they, should. No. But that is because the people are not the focus. The money is the focus. And allowing their artists to say something meaningful with their music or show the skills that they have worked their whole lives on is not the priority.
Personally, I don't think that SM hates the Chinese, although give it a few days and there will be more evidence that someone has pulled out of a million and one subtextual glances between three idols and their managers.
But...
I don't think that they use them effectively towards making the money they want. WAYV was a brilliant step in catering to a broader fan base. However, this isn't a drama we don't wish to angst, give Winwin some lines because the consumer likes it.
Do we want the angst? No. Do people thrive off it? HELL FUCKING YES.
Take the whole Renjun situation of late, claiming that this female manager booted him out of the car for and left him in the rain. Now, in the video, he has lost lamb vibes, without an umbrella, but it's funny how suddenly this female manager comes under fire that she is actively trying, to, what? Have him get a cold? But he said that there was a reasonable explanation for what happened in that video and he stated that them and the managers are like 'brothers and sisters'. So to cut to another moment him being told to 'shut up' or 'move'.Boi I have never seen siblings that are like 'darling could you please be quiet for a moment?', 'if possible, would you mind shifting slightly to the right?' Nah mate, Nah. that's movie shit, siblings like that are either in movies or have a far too close relationship.
Things are happening in SM that would show that something is going on, and I don't want to cut them loads of slack and then them actually be officially brought down for this because then they will be held accountable for the actions but more than that, I don't want to be publicly wrong.
Ok, I have said enough, and I don't want this to get too heavy so,
On to the next ten-tonne subject.
#2 D I S P A T C H
g a s p. I know. Betcha (by Baekhyun ;) ) never heard about this before.
@dispatch. KEEP YA FUCKING NOSE OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES BUSINESS.
Done.
PSYCH!
The invasion of privation is creepy, and everyone gets annoyed with you every time you do this. And you are doing this all for clout, and that's the whole thing that this company thrives off of. That shit doesn't matter, and if the companies were so horrified by the invasions of privacy and leaks of information they would cut all contact and deals with them, but they don't, and that is probably because every time that dispatch fucks over idols and ruins their lives they get a cut and seem better because "How dare they do this!"
#3 Dispatch fucking one life, in particular, 10 points if you get it right.
Hanbin or BI from IKON.
Ok, so I'm gonna keep this short because everyone is sick to death from hearing about this as it makes everyone sad.
What happened to him sucks, I could put it in a much more eloquent way, but you will still get the sentiment through all that rambling that it fucking sucks.
He needed help, support and privacy, and instead, he was shoved out of his band and the company. And the worst part is that I understand why that happened, the drug laws are really strict, and so YG did that to protect their whole image showing that they do not condone drug use.
This was not the way to handle it, especially compared to the western idea of dealing with a drug issue (i use issue cause I hate the word scandal) where we are open and requiring pity. The hiding of these problems doesn't help with getting these people the support they need.
Accepting that what happened to Hanbin would have allowed him to make the changes within his work life and his personal life that would have helped him look for support. But did they do that? No. they brushed it all under the rug and cut him out of the songs and basically pretend he didn't exist.
I wish that I could go about this all funny like and I hope that what I say doesn't offend, but I think that these things that are happening shouldn't be brushed under the rug and ignored. Tomorrow people will be talking about something else, and I don't think that's right. The people in charge, the people responsible, they should be held accountable and should have the repercussions for their actions come at them full force.
