On Friday the 17th of January 2020 Bighit uploaded 'Black Swan' Art film performed by the MN Dance Company.
What I saw in front of me fit perfectly with everything going on with Connect BTS - a collaboration of twenty two artists exploring ways in which different art forms can overlap, as well as their previous release of Interlude: Shadow.
I have always appreciated the use of strings in music and often find their effect to be incredibly moving and atmospheric. This coupled with highly skilled dancers and enchanting choreography made for a very impressive art piece even before I read the lyric translation.
Once I read the lyrics I fell in love with the message.

My interpretation of Black Swan:
The lyrics discuss a life without passion, specifically a life without a passion for music, comparing it to death.
The heart no longer races When hearing the music play
Oh that would be my first death
If this can no longer resonate No longer make my heart vibrate Then like this may be how I die my first death
(Translated from Korean)
I think in some parts it also sends a message that you should fight to keep your passion, whatever it may be;
Do your thang Do your thang with me now Do your thang
But I'll never get dragged away again Inside I saw myself, myself
Nothing can devour me I shout out with ferocity
(Translated from Korean)
The phrase 'Swan song' originates from the early 19th century said to be a song fabled to be sung by a dying swan. It most commonly refers to the final performance or activity of a person's career.
This is BTS highlighting their passions for music by expressing how bleak their lives would be without it.
I have never been prouder to be a BTS fan. This is a message I sent a friend with some of my thoughts:
"Now BTS has the world's attention they are using it even more to spread meaningful and mature messages. Helping to show that their fans aren't just mindless screaming girls. We think deeply and care about the messages and hidden meanings"
Some tweets that resonated with me:
Having listened to the studio version and watched the MV multiple times, as well as having time to have my own interpretation and see other's interpretations. I find the song and the message very emotional, especially being a creative person myself. I can imagine how miserable I would be if I didn't have some kind of creative outlet.

I have cried more than once at the end of the video.
I'm still trying to put my finger on why. I feel like it could be interpreted in a multitude of ways - maybe the 'Swan' is trying to fly but is being held back, symbolising being scared to realise your dream or maybe the 'Swan' is being held up and helped to fly.
Whatever the meaning, the final shot is so beautiful and accompanied by the strings, I can't help but well up sometimes.

Whatever your passion, may you never lose it.
